SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AT PARAFLIGHTS QUEENSTOWN

At Paraflights Queenstown, part of Watersports Ltd, we’re committed to protecting the natural beauty of Lake Wakatipu and preserving the cultural and social values of our community.

We recognise that Queenstown’s pristine waters, alpine landscapes, and unique ecosystems are at the heart of what makes this place so special. THE ENVIRONMENT

As a fuel-intensive business, we’re very aware of our Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: We recycle wherever possible, with accessible bins at our garage and kiosk. We also reuse materials and reduce waste across our operations.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTISES

We take sustainability seriously in our day-to-day operations. From reducing waste to improving fuel efficiency, here’s how we’re making a difference:

  • At Watersports Ltd, we follow the Tiaki Promise – caring for our people, place, and culture. We invite you to join us in protecting and preserving New Zealand, so it remains precious for future generations.

  • We’re proud to be part of the Tourism Sustainability Commitment, a nationwide initiative aiming to have every tourism business in New Zealand committed to sustainability.

  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: We recycle wherever possible, with accessible bins at our garage and kiosk. We also reuse materials and reduce waste across our operations.

  • Eco-Friendly Maintenance: Oil changes are done with care and recycled properly. We use rechargeable devices and recycle batteries. All boats are cleaned with Simple Green, an environmentally friendly boat wash.

  • Efficient Engines: Hydro Attack engines are maintained to run cleanly and efficiently, and we rebuild them, when possible, to extend their life. Currently, Thunder Jet boats are undergoing a full engine rebuild to increase the longevity of the vessels. In addition to the above, there are plans to upgrade the existing fleet within Watersports LTD.

  • Local Manufacturing: Whenever we can, we manufacture parts locally—like our shark wings and mufflers—to reduce transport emissions and support local businesses. Additionally, throughout the rebuilding and upgrading of our Jet Boats and branding of our BYD Sharks (trucks), we have ensured local central Otago businesses have been selected.

  • Noise Reduction: We’ve custom-designed and installed silencers on all our sharks, significantly reducing engine noise on the water.

  • Digital Memories: We encourage guests to capture their experience digitally on their phones instead of using USBs - if this is not possible, we can offer email copies of the experience to help the reduction of card and printer usage.

  • Energy Upgrades: We’re always looking to improve. Through the purchase of the hybrid BYD Sharks (trucks) used for Watersports LTD land operations, it ensures better fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The engine upgrades to the Thunder Jet Boats have successfully increased energy efficiency.

  • Staying Informed: We work closely with Maritime NZ, our watercraft manufacturers, and our boat surveyor to stay up to date with sustainable practices and innovations.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

At Paraflgihts Queenstown, community connection is at the heart of what we do. We’re proud to support local businesses, events, and organisations through sponsorships, free rides, and prize donations.

We regularly contribute to local charities, schools, sports teams, and fundraisers. As part of Watersports Ltd, our team is encouraged to volunteer and participate in community events.

We also maintain strong relationships with the Queenstown Lakes District Council, the wider tourism industry, and the local community. Hydro Attack is an active member of the Queenstown Chamber of Commerce, Destination Queenstown, and Tourism New Zealand.

We’re also proud to support the next generation of tourism professionals through our partnership with Queenstown Resort College.
